Air New Zealand Luggage & Bag Allowance Guide 2026
Air New Zealand's baggage allowance from Australia: carry-on is 1 bag plus 1 small item, 7 kg combined (55 x 40 x 23 cm). Checked baggage depends entirely on fare type - Seat Only includes no checked bag at all, Seat + Bag and Economy include 1 piece up to 23 kg, Premium Economy includes 2 pieces, and Business Premier includes 3 pieces. Some routes get an extra Economy bag: Australia to the USA/Canada (excluding New York), Honolulu, Shanghai and Singapore all allow 2 pieces instead of 1.
Air New Zealand's baggage rules are built around fare type, and the one rule that catches most Australian travellers out is this: if you booked a Seat Only fare, you get carry-on only - no checked baggage at all, regardless of how far you're flying. Every other fare tier includes at least one checked bag.
This guide covers carry-on rules, checked baggage by fare and cabin, Koru member benefits, route exceptions, excess baggage costs, packing weights, and the right suitcase for each trip type. All figures are sourced from airnewzealand.com, verified as of April 2026.

The Seat Only Fare: What It Means for Your Bags
Seat Only is Air New Zealand's cheapest fare and includes carry-on baggage only - no checked bag at all. This matters on trans-Tasman and New Zealand domestic routes, where Seat Only fares are common and can look very competitive against other options.
Turning up with a bag that exceeds carry-on limits means checking it in and paying excess baggage charges at the airport - considerably higher than pre-purchase prices. You can upgrade a Seat Only fare to include a checked bag via Manage Booking, up to 90 minutes before an international flight or 30 minutes before a domestic one.
Air New Zealand Carry-On Allowance
Economy passengers get one carry-on bag plus one small item, 7 kg combined. Premium Economy and Business Premier passengers get two carry-on bags plus one small item, 14 kg combined. Koru Gold, Koru Platinum, Koru Black and Star Alliance Gold members also get two carry-on bags on eligible fares - including Seat Only, where they're capped at 7 kg each rather than a combined 14 kg.
| Cabin / Status | Carry-on bags | Combined weight limit | Max dimensions per bag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy (all fares) | 1 bag + 1 small item | 7 kg total | 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear) |
| Premium Economy / Business Premier | 2 bags + 1 small item | 14 kg total (max 10 kg per bag) | 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear) |
| Koru Gold / Platinum / Black / Star Alliance Gold | 2 bags + 1 small item | 14 kg total (max 10 kg per bag) | 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear) |
Carry-on size is total linear dimensions (length + width + height), max 118 cm - roughly 55 x 40 x 23 cm. On Q300 regional aircraft, depth must not exceed 22 cm. If you're Premium Economy or status-eligible but connecting to a codeshare or partner-operated flight, you're limited to the standard 1-bag Economy allowance on that segment.

Route Exceptions Worth Knowing for Australian Travellers
Several checked baggage exceptions apply specifically to routes from Australia. They're not widely advertised and can catch people out when comparing fares.
| Route | Standard Economy allowance | Exception |
|---|---|---|
| Australia to USA/Canada (excl. New York) | 1 piece | 2 pieces allowed |
| Australia to New York | 1 piece | Standard 1 piece applies - no exception |
| Australia to Honolulu | 1 piece | 2 pieces allowed |
| Australia to Shanghai or Singapore | 1 piece | 2 pieces allowed |
Economy fares to Taipei get a similar 2-piece exception, but only when departing New Zealand - not from Australia.

Koru Membership and Extra Checked Baggage
Koru membership (Air New Zealand's frequent flyer programme) adds a free checked bag on eligible fares. The benefit is based on the member's own fare, not a travelling companion's, and applies only on Air New Zealand-operated and ticketed flights - not codeshare or partner segments.
| Tier | Extra checked bag | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Koru (standard) | +1 bag (excl. Seat Only) | Does not apply on Seat Only fares |
| Koru Gold / Platinum / Black | +1 bag (excl. Seat Only) | Also gets 2 carry-on bags (7 kg each on Seat Only, 14 kg combined otherwise) |
| Star Alliance Gold | +1 bag on Air NZ flights | Check the Koru benefits page for full details |

Packing Weight in Real Terms
Each checked bag holds up to 23 kg free. Over that, you can pay an overweight charge for bags up to 32 kg if there's space on the aircraft - but it's almost always cheaper to prepay a second bag instead. The cap is 3 bags total per passenger.
| Suitcase type | Typical case weight | Allowance | Left for packing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard large suitcase | 4.5 kg | 23 kg | 18.5 kg |
| Lightweight large suitcase | 3.2 kg | 23 kg | 19.8 kg |
| Premium lightweight large | 2.3 kg | 23 kg | 20.7 kg |

Pre-Paid Extra Bags and Excess Baggage Fees
Air New Zealand's Prepaid Extra Bags system lets you add bags to your booking online up to 90 minutes before an international departure or 30 minutes before domestic - almost always cheaper than paying at the airport. The maximum is 3 checked bags per passenger.
| Departing Australia to | Extra bag fee | Overweight/oversize fee (23-32 kg) |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand and Pacific Islands (excl. Perth) | AUD 105 per bag | AUD 80 |
| From Perth to New Zealand, and all other international destinations | AUD 180 per bag | AUD 110 |
Fees shown are for paying at the airport or adding online without a discount; pre-purchasing online ahead of departure is the cheapest route. Prepaid Extra Bags are only available when your entire journey is ticketed and operated by Air New Zealand - if your itinerary includes a codeshare partner or another airline on the same ticket, excess fees apply at check-in based on the rules of the most significant carrier.

Common Air New Zealand Baggage Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking Seat Only without realising there's no checked bag at all. Read the fare conditions before you buy.
- Assuming the 2-bag route exception applies when it doesn't. New York from Australia still gets only 1 bag in standard Economy, unlike the USA/Canada, Honolulu, Shanghai and Singapore exceptions.
- Carrying a standard laptop bag and expecting it to count as your personal item. Air New Zealand treats it as your carry-on bag.
- Packing a single bag over 23 kg when a prepaid second bag would be cheaper than the overweight charge.
- Assuming Koru benefits apply on codeshare or partner-operated flights. They don't.
- Travelling on separate tickets and expecting bags to be checked through. They won't be, and the allowance resets for each ticket.
