Air New Zealand Luggage & Bag Allowance Guide 2026

Air New Zealand Luggage & Bag Allowance Guide 2026

Last updated: April 2026. All allowances sourced directly from airnewzealand.com. Airline policies change - always confirm with Air New Zealand before you fly.

Flying Air New Zealand from Australia?

Air New Zealand's baggage rules are shaped by a clear fare-type structure, and the one rule that catches most Australian travellers out is this: if you booked a Seat Only fare, you get carry-on only - no checked baggage at all, regardless of how far you are flying.

Every other fare tier includes at least one checked bag. Once you know your fare, Air New Zealand's rules are among the most straightforward of any carrier flying the trans-Tasman and trans-Pacific routes.

This guide covers carry-on rules, checked baggage by fare and cabin, Koru member benefits, specific route exceptions, excess baggage costs, packing weights in real terms, and the right suitcase for each trip type. All figures are sourced from airnewzealand.com.

Air New Zealand Baggage Allowance - Quick Reference

Fare type Carry-on Checked bags included
Seat Only 1 bag + 1 small item (7 kg total) None - carry-on only
Seat + Bag / Flexichange 1 bag + 1 small item (7 kg total) 1 piece, up to 23 kg
Flexirefund / Economy (international) 1 bag + 1 small item (7 kg total) 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each
The Works / Worksflexi 1 bag + 1 small item (7 kg total) 1 piece, up to 23 kg
Premium Economy 2 bags + 1 small item (14 kg total) 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each
Business Premier / Business Premier Luxe 2 bags + 1 small item (14 kg total) 3 pieces, up to 23 kg each
Maximum 3 pieces total per passenger regardless of fare or Koru tier. Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg, and must not exceed 158 cm in total dimensions (length + width + height).

The Seat Only Fare: What It Means for Your Bags

Air New Zealand's Seat Only fare is the cheapest ticket type and includes carry-on baggage only. There is no checked bag at all. This matters particularly for trans-Tasman and New Zealand domestic routes, where Seat Only fares are common and can look very competitive against other options.

If you are on a Seat Only fare and arrive at the airport with a bag that exceeds the carry-on limits, you will need to check it in and pay excess baggage charges at the airport - which are considerably higher than pre-purchase prices. You can upgrade a Seat Only fare to include a checked bag via Manage Booking, up to 90 minutes before an international flight or 30 minutes before a domestic one.

Koru member exception: Koru Gold, Koru Elite, and Koru Black members get an additional checked bag even on Seat Only fares - but only on Air New Zealand-operated and ticketed flights. Seat fares do not include the additional bag benefit for standard Koru members.

Air New Zealand Carry-On Allowance

The short answer: Economy passengers get one carry-on bag plus one small item, with a combined limit of 7 kg. Premium Economy and Business Premier passengers get two carry-on bags plus one small item, with a combined limit of 14 kg. Koru Gold and Elite members also receive two carry-on bags on eligible flights.

Cabin / Status Carry-on bags Combined weight limit Max dimensions per bag
Economy (all fares) 1 bag + 1 small item 7 kg total 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear)
Premium Economy / Business Premier 2 bags + 1 small item 14 kg total 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear)
Koru Gold / Elite members 2 bags + 1 small item 14 kg total 55 x 40 x 23 cm (118 cm total linear)
Air New Zealand measures carry-on size by total linear dimensions (length + width + height). The maximum is 118 cm, which equates to a bag measuring approximately 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Note that on Q300 regional aircraft the depth must not exceed 22 cm.

Laptop bags: A standard or large laptop bag counts as a carry-on bag, not a small personal item. If your laptop bag is large enough to be noticeable as a bag, Air New Zealand treats it as your carry-on - leaving no room for a separate cabin suitcase unless you are in Premium Economy or Business Premier.

Route Exceptions Worth Knowing for Australian Travellers

Air New Zealand's checked baggage allowances have several route-specific exceptions that apply directly to Australian travellers. These are not widely advertised and can catch people out when comparing fares.

Route Standard Economy allowance Exception
Australia to USA/Canada (excl. New York) 1 piece (standard Economy) 2 pieces allowed on these routes
Australia to New York 1 piece Standard 1 piece applies (no exception)
Australia to Honolulu 1 piece (standard Economy) 2 pieces allowed on this route
Australia to Shanghai or Singapore 1 piece (standard Economy) 2 pieces allowed on these routes

Koru Membership and Extra Checked Baggage

Koru membership (Air New Zealand's frequent flyer tier programme) provides an additional free checked bag on eligible fares.

The key rule: the extra bag benefit applies per member based on their own fare, not a travelling companion's fare. It also applies only on Air New Zealand-operated and ticketed flights - not on codeshare or partner airline segments.

Tier Extra checked bag Note
Koru (standard) +1 bag (excl. Seat and Business fares) Does not apply on Seat Only fares
Koru Gold / Koru Elite +1 bag (all eligible fares) Also receives 2 carry-on bags
Star Alliance Gold +1 bag on Air NZ flights Check Koru benefits page for details

Packing Weight in Real Terms

Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg. If a bag exceeds 23 kg and you are willing to pay, you can pay an excess overweight charge at the airport for bags up to 32 kg - but it is always cheaper to split the weight across a prepaid extra bag. The total number of bags per passenger is capped at 3.

Suitcase type Typical case weight Allowance (1 bag, 23 kg) Left for packing
Standard large suitcase 4.5 kg 23 kg 18.5 kg
Lightweight large suitcase 3.2 kg 23 kg 19.8 kg
Premium lightweight large 2.3 kg 23 kg 20.7 kg

A 2.2 kg saving from choosing a premium lightweight suitcase is worth roughly one winter jacket plus a pair of boots. On a 23 kg allowance, that difference is proportionally more impactful than on a 30 kg allowance. Browse Tosca's large lightweight suitcase range to make the most of your Air New Zealand allowance.

Which Suitcase for Your Air New Zealand Trip?

Trip type Recommended suitcase Why it works Shop
Seat Only fare, short trip Carry-on (up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm) Only option on Seat Only - must stay within 7 kg Lightweight Carry-On
Trans-Tasman, 3-7 days Medium (65-70 cm) Ideal for 23 kg checked allowance on Seat + Bag Medium Lightweight
Auckland, 1-2 weeks Large (75-80 cm) Uses full 23 kg checked allowance; lighter case = more packing weight Large Lightweight
USA / Pacific route (2 bags allowed) Large + medium Spreads weight across 2 x 23 kg; avoids single heavy bag Large + Medium

Pre-paid Extra Bags

Air New Zealand's Prepaid Extra Bags system allows you to add bags to your booking online up to 90 minutes before an international departure or 30 minutes before a domestic one. Pre-paid bags are almost always cheaper than paying at the airport. The maximum total across all passengers is 3 checked bags per person.

Prepaid Extra Bags are only available when your entire journey is ticketed and operated by Air New Zealand. If your itinerary includes a codeshare partner or another airline on the same ticket, excess baggage fees apply at check-in based on the rules of the most significant carrier.

Common Air New Zealand Baggage Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking a Seat Only fare without realising there is no checked baggage included - read the fare conditions before you buy
  • Assuming the route exception for 2 bags applies when it does not - New York from Australia still gets only 1 bag in standard Economy
  • Carrying a standard laptop bag and expecting it to count as your small personal item - Air New Zealand treats it as your carry-on bag
  • Packing a single bag over 23 kg when a prepaid second bag would be cheaper than the overweight charge
  • Assuming Koru membership benefits apply on codeshare or partner airline-operated flights - they do not
  • Travelling with separate tickets and expecting bags to be checked through - they will not be, and the allowance resets for each ticket

FAQs About Air New Zealand Baggage

How does Air New Zealand measure carry-on bag size?

By total linear dimensions - the sum of length + width + height. The maximum is 118 cm, which corresponds to a bag of approximately 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Air New Zealand specifies maximum individual dimensions of 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm.

Can I add a checked bag to a Seat Only booking?

Yes. You can upgrade from a Seat Only fare to a Seat + Bag fare via Manage Booking, up to 90 minutes before an international flight or 30 minutes before a domestic one. Alternatively, you can purchase a Prepaid Extra Bag for the same booking.

What is the maximum weight for a single Air New Zealand checked bag?

Each checked bag may weigh up to 23 kg under the free allowance. If a bag is over 23 kg and under 32 kg, and there is space on the aircraft, you can pay an overweight charge at the airport. Air New Zealand will not accept any single bag over 32 kg.

Do infants get a checked baggage allowance?

Infants travelling on an infant fare do not receive checked baggage, but they do get one piece of carry-on. Both child and infant fares allow you to check a stroller, car seat, booster seat, or portacot free of charge in addition to any other allowance.

What suitcase size is best for Air New Zealand from Australia?

For carry-on, any bag up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm works. A lightweight cabin suitcase maximises your usable weight within the 7 kg Economy limit. For checked baggage, a large suitcase (75-80 cm) is the best choice for a full 23 kg allowance. On routes with 2 bags allowed (such as Australia to USA or Honolulu), a large suitcase plus a medium or carry-on gives you the most flexible packing split.
