Delta Air Lines baggage allowance from Australia: carry-on is 1 bag plus 1 personal item on every fare, including Main Basic, up to 56 x 35 x 23 cm for the carry-on. Main Basic and Main Classic both include 1 free checked bag up to 23 kg on this route, since Delta includes a free bag on its cheapest fare for transpacific flights to Asia and Australia. Premium Select includes 2 free bags at 23 kg each, and Delta One business class includes 2 free bags at 32 kg each.

Delta Air Lines flies direct between Australia and the United States entirely through Los Angeles, with year-round routes to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. Delta added Brisbane in December 2024 and Melbourne in December 2025, making it the newest of the three US legacy carriers to build out a full Australian network. The most useful thing to know about Delta's baggage allowance from Australia is that its cheapest fare, Main Basic, still includes a free checked bag on this route, unlike almost everywhere else Delta flies.

This guide covers Delta's cabin baggage dimensions and weight limits, checked baggage by fare and cabin, the Main Basic exception on transpacific routes, excess and overweight fees, and which suitcase works best for your trip. Figures are drawn from Delta's published baggage policy and cross-checked against current industry reporting, verified July 2026.

Delta Cabin Baggage Dimensions and Weight Limits

Every Delta fare between Australia and the United States includes one personal item, which must fit under the seat in front of you. Delta does not publish a fixed size for the personal item, only that it needs to fit under the seat, so a laptop bag, handbag or small backpack all typically qualify.

Every fare also includes a full-size carry-on bag up to 56 x 35 x 23 cm including handles and wheels. Delta does not enforce a weight limit on carry-on bags out of Australia, unlike some Asian airports on its network where a weight cap applies.

Fare Carry-on bags Max carry-on size Personal item
Main Basic 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item 56 x 35 x 23 cm Must fit under the seat, no fixed size
Main Classic / Comfort+ 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item 56 x 35 x 23 cm Must fit under the seat, no fixed size
Premium Select / Delta One 1 carry-on bag + 1 personal item 56 x 35 x 23 cm Must fit under the seat, no fixed size

Delta does not strip the carry-on from Main Basic the way United and some other carriers do on domestic routes. Every Delta fare gets the same cabin allowance, and the difference between fares shows up in checked baggage instead.

Delta Checked Baggage Allowance by Fare (Australia Routes)

The table below shows Delta's checked baggage allowance between Australia and the United States, by fare and cabin. Every figure applies regardless of which Australian city you fly from, since all three are served from Los Angeles.

Cabin Fare Free checked bags Max weight per bag
Main Main Basic 1 bag 23 kg
Main Main Classic 1 bag 23 kg
Comfort+ Standard 1 bag 23 kg
Premium Select Standard 2 bags 23 kg each
Delta One Standard 2 bags 32 kg each

Every checked bag, regardless of cabin or fare, must stay within 158 cm total linear dimensions (length plus width plus height). Delta SkyMiles Medallion members and eligible Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders can add further free bags on top of these figures.

Main Basic Explained

Delta retired the "Basic Economy" name in 2025 and rebranded its fare ladder as Main Basic, Main Classic and Main Extra. The underlying baggage rules carried over largely unchanged through the rename.

On domestic US, transatlantic and South American routes, Main Basic charges for every checked bag. On long-haul transpacific routes, including Australia, Main Basic includes one free checked bag, the same as Main Classic.

i
Why this matters when comparing fares Because Main Basic already includes a free bag to Australia, the price gap to Main Classic buys flexibility to change your flight and select your seat, not a first checked bag you would not otherwise have. Weigh that against how firm your travel dates are before paying the difference.

Delta Excess and Overweight Baggage Fees

Delta applies separate fees for bags that are too heavy and bags that are too large, and both can apply to the same bag if it breaches both limits. Fees are charged in US dollars and converted to Australian dollars at your card provider's exchange rate.

Bag condition Weight or size Approximate fee
Standard checked bag Up to 23 kg, up to 158 cm combined Included on Main Basic and above
Overweight, tier one 23 kg to 32 kg Around USD 100
Overweight, tier two 32 kg to 45 kg Around USD 200
Maximum weight Above 45 kg Not accepted as standard checked baggage

Delta's premium cabins and Medallion elite members follow a 32 kg per-bag limit before the same overweight fees apply. Special items such as musical instruments and sporting equipment are allowed up to larger combined dimensions, subject to separate fees.

What Your Allowance Actually Gets You

Delta's Routes from Australia

Australian city US gateway Schedule
Sydney Los Angeles Year-round, Delta's longest-running Australian route
Brisbane Los Angeles Year-round since December 2024
Melbourne Los Angeles Year-round since December 2025, on Delta One-heavy A350-900s

Los Angeles is Delta's only US gateway to Australia. Whichever Australian city you fly from, the carry-on and checked baggage rules in this guide apply the same way, since they are set by fare and cabin rather than by route.

Which Suitcase for Your Delta Trip?

🌍
Main Basic or Main Classic - most trips
23 kg checked allowance. A 67 cm case weighs 3–4.5 kg depending on the shell, leaving 18.5–20 kg to pack — up to 10 days with careful packing. Softside gives you the most usable allowance; hardside costs you about a kilo in exchange for protection.
Checked: 1 bag, 23 kg
Shop Medium hard SUITCASES
🧳
Premium Select - 2 bags at 23 kg
46 kg across 2 bags. Two 76 cm hard cases weigh about 9 kg together, leaving roughly 37 kg to pack — long trips, or two people sharing. The allowance is generous enough that the hard shell costs you nothing you'll notice.
Checked: 2 bags, 23 kg each
Shop Large hard Cases
✈️
Delta One - 2 bags at 32 kg
64 kg across 2 bags — a large plus a medium. In practice you'll fill the space before you reach the weight: about 20 kg in the large, 14 in the medium. The allowance is there so you stop weighing bags, not so you have to fill them.
Checked: 2 bags, 32 kg each

How Delta Compares on the Australia to US Route

Delta's Main Basic allowance (1 bag, 23 kg, included on its cheapest fare) compared with other carriers flying between Australia and the United States:

1 free bag included even on the cheapest fare. Carry-on: 56 x 35 x 23 cm.
American Airlines
32 kg
Main Cabin and Basic Economy both included, 32 kg on Australia routes specifically.
United Airlines
23 kg
Standard Economy. Basic Economy: fee applies for the first bag.
Qantas
30 kg
Flexi/Classic Economy on Pacific routes. Economy Lite: 23 kg.

Reflects standard published Economy fares as of July 2026. Always verify on the carrier's own website before booking.

Common Delta Baggage Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming Main Basic never includes a free bag. Domestic and European Main Basic charges for every checked bag, but the Australia and Asia transpacific exception means Main Basic here does include one.
  • Confusing the renamed fare ladder. Delta dropped "Basic Economy" in 2025 in favour of Main Basic, Main Classic and Main Extra. Older articles and some booking sites may still use the old names.
  • Packing a single bag close to 23 kg without weighing it. A standard large suitcase packed for a long trip can easily tip over the limit. Weigh at home before you leave, since the overweight fee applies from the very first kilogram over.
  • Forgetting Premium Select's weight limit matches Economy. Premium Select gets 2 free bags, but each is still capped at 23 kg, not the 32 kg that applies to Delta One.
  • Not accounting for currency conversion on fees. Delta charges baggage fees in US dollars. The amount on your Australian card statement will vary slightly from the headline USD figure depending on your provider's exchange rate.
