TOSCA Talking Travel: V8 Supercar Driver Mark Winterbottom July 20, 2018 – Posted in: Talking Travel

Welcome to the second edition of TOSCA’s Talking Travel blog.  Our guest blogger is Champion V8 Supercar Driver and 2013 Bathurst winner Mark Winterbottom.  Learn more about the travel habits of one Australia’s  best V8  Supercar drivers.

My whole life is on my phone, so that’s an obvious one. My schedule, travel info, emails, social media, games, almost everything I need is on there, so I keep it on me at all times. I also like to bring a laptop with me to races so I can work and study any data at the race track, anything to give me an edge. When I travel with my kids, we bring a tablet along with so they can watch movies or play games as well. My oldest has gotten into Clash of Clans, so he’s always trying to get troops off me and my teammates, so tech is really important to us on the road.

As often as we travel for races, it’s nice to get away and go somewhere with the family without worrying about racing. We did that in May, and Bali was awesome, so that’s definitely up there, but the Amalfi Coast in Italy was incredible. With the beach and the town right on the hillside, it’s really nice. It was great to go there and relax, not worry about appearances or anything, just spending days with the family.

Bathurst is Australia’s greatest race track and for good reason. All the elevation, the technical corners, the speed, as a driver it’s challenging and a lot of fun to drive, and the Bathurst 1000 is just a massive event that’s so cool to be a part of. There’s nothing like going down Conrod Straight in the lead on the last lap.

Always pack earlier than you think. It seems like whenever I’m in a rush to pack I forget something and remember it just after it’s too late. It’s better to have a bag sitting on the floor for a day or two than to leave something important behind.

After the Winton round in May, we packed up the kids and went to Bali and Italy for a couple weeks. We had just gotten done with five race rounds in nine weeks, so it was a good time to get away from everything for a bit. It was great to spend a few days on the beach with the family and see parts of the world you don’t get to visit very often.

There are several important things I take with me. My race uniform is probably most important, after all it’s what I have to wear in order to get into the car. I always have to have that with me, and each suit is specially made so I need to have it with me whenever I travel to a race.

I really enjoy it. My Prime Lite makes travelling pretty easy. It’s light so I’m not lugging it around everywhere, and tough enough that it won’t give me any trouble if I bump into things rushing to make a flight. Obviously I travel a lot, so it’s a great suitcase to have with me when I’m on the go.
