Cathay Pacific Baggage Allowance Guide for Australian Travellers (2026)

Cathay Pacific flies from six Australian cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide (seasonal) and Cairns (seasonal) - connecting Australia to Hong Kong and then onward to more than 100 destinations worldwide. The single biggest thing Australian travellers miss is that not every Economy ticket includes two checked bags: the cheaper Economy Light fare gives you just one piece, and many passengers only discover this when they reach the check-in counter.

This guide covers everything you need to know about Cathay Pacific's baggage rules before you fly from Australia: carry-on limits, Economy fare differences, checked allowances by route, family and infant allowances, liquids and battery rules, and which suitcase to pack for your trip. All figures are sourced from cathaypacific.com and verified as of May 2026.

Cathay Pacific Baggage Allowance at a Glance

The table below shows standard allowances from Australia. Cathay Pacific uses a weight concept on Australia routes - your total checked weight is what matters, not strictly the number of bags, though standard practice reflects the piece counts shown. Routes to and from the Americas and direct New Zealand services use a piece system with different weights - see the Checked Baggage section for details.

Cabin / Fare Carry-on (1 bag) Personal item Checked baggage
Economy Light 7 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 1 piece, up to 23 kg
Economy Essential 7 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each
Economy Flex 7 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each
Premium Economy 7 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each
Business 10 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 pieces, up to 32 kg each
First 15 kg, 56 x 36 x 23 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 3 pieces, up to 32 kg each

Carry-On Baggage Rules

All passengers are entitled to one main cabin bag plus one small personal item, regardless of fare type or cabin class. The weight and size limits are strict - Cathay Pacific is known to weigh carry-on bags at check-in counters, particularly at its Hong Kong hub.

Carry-on size comparison - Cathay Pacific
Cabin bag
56 x 36 x 23 cm
Max 7 kg (Econ/PE)

Economy and Premium Economy 56 x 36 x 23 cm 7 kg 40 x 30 x 15 cm
Business 56 x 36 x 23 cm 10 kg 40 x 30 x 15 cm
First 56 x 36 x 23 cm 15 kg 40 x 30 x 15 cm

The size limit is the same across all cabins. The cabin bag size is given as height x width x depth. Cathay Pacific's published dimensions differ slightly from the sticker on some airline bag gauges - always measure your packed bag, not the bag shell alone.

!
Weight is enforced Cathay Pacific weighs carry-on bags at check-in and sometimes at the gate, particularly at Hong Kong International Airport. A bag that looks borderline will be checked. If your carry-on is close to 7 kg, transfer heavier items to your personal item or checked bag before you reach the counter.

Economy Fare Types - What Each One Includes

Cathay Pacific's three Economy fares give you different levels of baggage, flexibility and seat selection. Booking the cheapest Light fare and then paying for add-ons at the airport is almost always more expensive than booking Essential from the start if you need a second bag.

Travelling to Australia for study or a working holiday? Cathay Pacific's Essential and Flex fares are designed for exactly this situation. Two checked bags of 23 kg each gives you 46 kg of luggage capacity, which is enough for most long-term moves. The airline also offers a dedicated Student Fare with up to three checked bags on selected routes.

Checked Baggage in Full

Cathay Pacific uses a weight concept on most routes from Australia, and a piece system on flights to and from the Americas and on direct New Zealand services. The number of bags and the maximum weight per bag depend on your cabin class and fare type. One rule applies everywhere: no single piece of checked baggage can exceed 32 kg or 203 cm in total dimensions (length + width + height).

Standard routes from Australia (weight concept)

Flights from Australia to Hong Kong and beyond (Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa) use the weight concept. This means your allowance is expressed as a total weight - you are not strictly limited to a set number of bags, provided no single piece exceeds 32 kg. For example, an Economy Essential passenger with a 2 x 23 kg allowance could check one 40 kg bag and one 6 kg bag. The piece counts in the table below reflect standard practice and what you will typically see in Manage Booking. Always verify your exact allowance on your e-ticket.

Cabin / Fare Typical pieces Max weight per piece Max total dimensions per piece
Economy Light 1 piece 23 kg 158 cm (L+W+H)
Economy Essential / Flex 2 pieces 23 kg each 158 cm (L+W+H) each
Premium Economy 2 pieces 23 kg each 158 cm (L+W+H) each
Business 2 pieces 32 kg each 158 cm (L+W+H) each
First 3 pieces 32 kg each 158 cm (L+W+H) each

Routes to and from the Americas (USA, Canada)

Flights to and from North America use the piece system. The following allowances apply:

Cabin Pieces Max weight per piece
Economy 1 piece 23 kg
Premium Economy 2 pieces 23 kg each
Business 2 pieces 32 kg each
First 3 pieces 32 kg each

Note: Economy passengers on US/Canada routes receive 1 piece regardless of fare type (Light, Essential or Flex). Check your e-ticket for the exact allowance on your itinerary.

!
New Zealand routes (Hong Kong–Auckland/Christchurch direct) Direct Cathay Pacific services between Hong Kong and Auckland or Christchurch use the piece system, not the weight concept. Economy passengers receive 1 piece up to 23 kg; Premium Economy receives 2 pieces up to 23 kg each. If any segment of your itinerary includes a direct HKG–AKL or HKG–CHC flight, check your e-ticket to confirm the allowance on that leg - it may differ from the rest of your journey.

Cathay membership (formerly Marco Polo Club) baggage boosts

Cathay Pacific's loyalty programme (rebranded from Marco Polo Club to Cathay) gives Silver, Gold and Diamond members additional checked baggage allowances on top of their ticket entitlement. Boosts apply to Cathay Pacific-marketed and -operated flights:

Membership tier Oneworld equivalent Carry-on boost Checked boost
Green - None None
Silver Ruby 10 kg extra (min 10 kg total) 10 kg extra checked allowance
Gold Sapphire 10 kg extra (min 10 kg total) 15 kg or 1 extra piece extra
Diamond Emerald 15 kg extra (min 15 kg total) 20 kg or 1 extra piece extra

Boosts apply to CX-marketed flights. Oneworld partner airline flights do not carry the same entitlements - check the relevant carrier's policy. Cathay Pacific announced membership programme changes in October 2025; new benefits take effect from January 2027.

What Your Allowance Actually Gets You

Knowing your weight limit and knowing what fits in it are two different things. Use this reference to build a realistic packing list before you arrive at the airport.

Packing weight reference guide
Common item weights to help you plan. Subtract your suitcase weight from your allowance first - a 55 cm carry-on case typically weighs 2.0-2.8 kg, a 67 cm checked case 3.0-3.5 kg, and a 76 cm checked case 3.8-4.8 kg.

Pre-Purchasing Additional Baggage

If you need more baggage than your fare includes, buying online in advance is significantly cheaper than paying at the airport. Cathay Pacific offers a discount of up to 10% when you pre-purchase at least 24 hours before departure.

1
Log in to Manage Booking at cathaypacific.com - you can add baggage online from the time of booking up to 24 hours before your flight's departure. This is the cheapest option.
2
At least 24 hours before departure - enjoy up to 10% off the standard online rate. The discount is automatically applied when you add extra baggage through Manage Booking or the Cathay app.
3
Less than 24 hours before or at the airport - standard excess baggage charges apply. Rates vary by route zone and are calculated per kilogram or per piece depending on your destination. Airport rates are the most expensive option.
4
Using Asia Miles - Cathay membership (Green tier and above) allows you to redeem Asia Miles for extra baggage allowance through Manage Booking, which can sometimes work out cheaper than paying cash.
i
Excess baggage fees by zone Cathay Pacific divides the world into zones for excess baggage pricing. Exact fees are not published as a flat rate on the airline's website - they vary significantly by route and are shown when you add extra baggage in Manage Booking. Fees on trans-Pacific and Australia routes can be steep; pre-purchasing online is always the better option.

Liquids, Gels, Powders and Restricted Items

Security restrictions on liquids, aerosols and gels apply at Australian airports and are enforced independently of Cathay Pacific's baggage rules. The rules that apply at departure are determined by the airport's security authority, not the airline.

Standard liquids rule (applies at most airports)

  • Liquids, aerosols and gels in containers of 100 ml or less per item.
  • All containers must fit inside one clear, resealable plastic bag with a capacity no greater than 1 litre.
  • One bag per passenger; the bag must be presented separately at the security screening point.
  • Items exceeding 100 ml per container must be packed in your checked baggage, even if the container is mostly empty.

Australia and New Zealand powder rules

!
Powders - special rules for flights departing Australia Australia and New Zealand impose additional restrictions on powders in cabin baggage. Powder substances (including dry shampoo, protein powder, talc, sand and similar items) exceeding 350 ml in volume per container may be confiscated at the security point. Pack larger quantities of powders in your checked baggage. This rule is enforced by the Australian Border Force and airport security authorities, not Cathay Pacific.

Medicines and medical liquids

Prescription medicines, baby formula, breast milk and medical liquids can be carried in quantities above 100 ml, provided they are presented for inspection at the security screening point. Carry documentation from your doctor or pharmacy for prescription items.

Duty-free liquids

Duty-free liquids purchased after the security checkpoint may be carried in your cabin bag. Keep the sealed, tamper-evident bag and receipt. Note that if you are transiting through Hong Kong, secondary liquid screening applies for passengers connecting to US-bound flights - keep duty-free items in their original sealed bags with the receipt visible.

Smart Bag Rules and Lithium Battery Restrictions

Smart bags - luggage with built-in USB charging ports, GPS trackers or powered wheels - are subject to strict rules on Cathay Pacific flights. The rules also changed for all lithium batteries from April 2025 following Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department updates.

Smart bags with removable batteries

  • If the battery is removable, the smart bag may be checked in with the battery removed.
  • The removed battery must be carried in your cabin baggage and treated as a spare lithium battery.
  • Smart bags may also be carried as carry-on luggage with the battery installed, provided the bag is within the carry-on size and weight limits.

Smart bags with non-removable batteries

  • Smart bags with non-removable lithium batteries are not accepted as either cabin or checked baggage on Cathay Pacific flights.
  • Hoverboards, self-balancing scooters and AirWheels are prohibited regardless of battery type or capacity.

Spare lithium batteries and power banks (updated April 2025)

  • All spare lithium batteries and power banks must be carried in cabin baggage only - never in checked baggage.
  • Power banks must be stored under the seat in front of you during the flight, not in the overhead bin.
  • Using power banks to charge devices or recharging power banks via in-seat USB ports is prohibited during flight (effective April 2025).
  • Batteries must be under 100 Wh each to be carried without airline approval. Batteries between 100 and 160 Wh require prior airline approval (limit: two per passenger). Batteries over 160 Wh are prohibited.
  • Spare batteries must be individually protected - tape over terminals or carry in original packaging or individual plastic bags.
  • You may carry up to 20 spare batteries per person.

Families - Children and Infant Allowances

Infants (under 2 years old, no seat purchased)

When you purchase an infant ticket without an allocated seat, your infant travels on your lap. Cathay Pacific provides a checked baggage allowance for the infant in addition to your own ticket allowance:

What's included for lap infants Details
Checked baggage 1 piece up to 23 kg (Economy/Premium Economy) or 32 kg (Business/First), max dimensions 115 cm (L+W+H)
Stroller 1 collapsible stroller included free of charge - can be checked or brought to the gate
Car seat 1 car seat included free as checked baggage
Nappy bag A small bag of food, formula and nappies for use on the flight may be carried into the cabin

Source: cathaypacific.com - travelling with infants and cathaypacific.com - infant baggage FAQ - Verified May 2026

Children aged 2 to under 12 (child ticket with seat)

Children on a child ticket have their own allocated seat and receive the full adult baggage allowance for their fare type and cabin. A child travelling on an Economy Essential ticket gets 2 x 23 kg checked, the same as an adult on the same fare.

Strollers can be gate-checked Cathay Pacific allows umbrella-type collapsible strollers to be carried through the terminal and gate-checked free of charge, where cabin stowage is not available. Full-size prams must be checked as hold baggage. All aircraft are equipped with baby bassinets, which can be requested at the time of booking.

Codeshare and Multi-Carrier Journey Rules

If your itinerary includes flights operated by an airline other than Cathay Pacific - even if the flight number starts with CX - the baggage rules can change. This is one of the more confusing areas of airline policy.

Journey type Which policy applies?
Flights marketed and operated by Cathay Pacific (CX flight number, CX aircraft) Cathay Pacific baggage rules apply in full.
Flights marketed by Cathay Pacific but operated by a partner airline (e.g. a CX flight number on an American Airlines aircraft) The operating carrier's baggage rules may apply for carry-on. For checked baggage, check your ticket carefully or contact Cathay Pacific.
Multi-carrier itinerary (your ticket covers more than one airline) The Most Significant Carrier (MSC) rule typically applies. For international journeys, the carrier on the first international segment is usually considered the MSC. Check both carriers before you fly.
Oneworld partner flights booked separately Each flight is governed by the operating carrier's own baggage policy. Your Cathay membership tier may give you extra allowance on some partners but not all.

Always check your e-ticket receipt or Manage Booking for the exact allowance assigned to each segment of your journey. When in doubt, contact Cathay Pacific directly before travel.

How Cathay Pacific Compares on the Australia Route

Here is how Cathay Pacific's Economy Essential allowance (the standard two-bag option) compares with the Economy standard allowance on the other major carriers operating between Australia and Asia-Pacific.

Cathay Pacific (Essential)
2 x 23 kg
Economy Essential from Australia. Light fare: 1 x 23 kg. Carry-on: 7 kg.
Singapore Airlines
30 kg
Economy standard from Australia (weight concept). Carry-on: 7 kg.
Qantas
30 kg
Economy Flexi/Classic from Australia. Economy Lite: 23 kg. Carry-on: 7 kg.
Emirates
25 kg
Economy Saver from Australia (varies by fare). Carry-on: 7 kg.
Air New Zealand
23 kg
Economy fare from Australia (1 piece). Carry-on: 7 kg.

Allowances shown are for comparison purposes and reflect standard published Economy fares as of May 2026. Exact allowances vary by fare sub-type and route - always verify on the carrier's own website before booking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Booking Economy Light when you need two bags. Light includes only one 23 kg piece. Adding a second bag at the airport is the most expensive way to fix this. Upgrade to Essential at booking if there is any chance you will need a second bag.
  • Exceeding the 7 kg carry-on limit. Cathay Pacific weighs bags at check-in and at the gate, especially at Hong Kong. A carry-on over 7 kg may have to be checked, and airport excess rates apply.
  • Packing a smart bag with a non-removable battery. These are banned on Cathay Pacific in both cabin and hold. Check your smart luggage product details before you fly.
  • Putting spare batteries or power banks in checked baggage. All spare lithium batteries and power banks must travel in your cabin bag, regardless of capacity. Items found in checked baggage at the screening point will be confiscated.
  • Using a power bank to charge devices during flight. This is prohibited on Cathay Pacific since April 2025. Power banks stored in the overhead bin are also not permitted; they must be under the seat in front of you.
  • Travelling with over 350 ml of powder in your cabin bag from Australia. Australian airport security enforces the 350 ml powder limit. Protein powders, dry shampoo, baby formula and similar items in large containers will be confiscated or require you to check them.
  • Assuming your Cathay membership tier boosts apply on partner flights. Extra baggage from Cathay Gold or Diamond status only applies reliably on Cathay Pacific-marketed and -operated flights. Always check with the operating carrier when connecting onto another airline.
  • Not checking your bag dimensions - only the shell. Size limits are for your packed, closed bag. Overfull bags that bulge past the gauge or can't close properly will not pass.
  • Assuming New Zealand routes follow the same rules as other Australia routes. Direct Cathay Pacific flights between Hong Kong and Auckland or Christchurch use the piece system, not the weight concept. Economy passengers on these services receive 1 piece up to 23 kg - check your e-ticket if any leg of your journey includes these routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Economy Light on Cathay Pacific include any checked bags?
Yes - Economy Light includes one piece of checked baggage up to 23 kg on most routes from Australia. It does not include a second bag. If you need a second bag, you should book Economy Essential (which includes 2 x 23 kg) or add extra baggage through Manage Booking. Adding at the airport is the most expensive option.
What is the maximum weight for a single checked bag on Cathay Pacific?
No single piece of checked baggage can exceed 32 kg, regardless of your cabin class or fare type. Any bag weighing more than 32 kg will not be accepted without prior airline approval, and Cathay Pacific does not guarantee approval. If you are carrying items such as sporting equipment, contact the airline before you travel.
Can I bring a laptop bag in addition to my 7 kg carry-on on Cathay Pacific?
Yes. All Cathay Pacific passengers are permitted one main carry-on bag (up to 7 kg in Economy) plus one small personal item such as a laptop bag, handbag, small backpack or camera bag. The personal item must fit within 40 x 30 x 15 cm. The laptop bag does not count against your 7 kg carry-on allowance.
How much does it cost to add an extra bag on Cathay Pacific?
Extra baggage fees vary by route zone and are not published as a flat rate. You can see the exact cost when you log in to Manage Booking and add baggage online. Purchasing at least 24 hours before departure gives you up to 10% off. Airport rates are significantly higher. As a rough guide, extra checked bags on Australia-Hong Kong routes typically cost between AUD 100-200 per piece when added online in advance.
Can I take a power bank on a Cathay Pacific flight?
Yes, but with restrictions introduced in April 2025. Power banks must be in your carry-on baggage - not checked baggage. During the flight, they must be stored under the seat in front of you, not in the overhead bin. You cannot use power banks to charge devices or recharge them via in-seat USB ports during the flight. Power banks must be under 100 Wh to be carried without prior approval.
Does flying Business Class give you access to more checked baggage on Cathay Pacific from Australia?
Yes. Business Class passengers receive 2 pieces of checked baggage at 32 kg each, compared to 23 kg each in Economy Essential. That is a potential 64 kg of checked baggage capacity across two bags, versus 46 kg in Economy. Business Class carry-on is also higher at 10 kg rather than 7 kg.
What happens if my bag is slightly over the weight limit at the airport?
Cathay Pacific charges excess baggage fees for any weight over your allowance. On most non-Americas routes, fees are charged per kilogram over the limit rather than as a flat fee per bag, which means a small overage is less costly than a very heavy overage. You can also rearrange bags at the check-in area before the bags are weighed again. If you know you are likely to be over, pre-purchasing extra baggage online before departure is always cheaper.
Do children and infants get a baggage allowance on Cathay Pacific?
Children on a child ticket (aged 2-11) get the same baggage allowance as adults on the same fare. Lap infants (under 2, no seat) receive 1 checked piece up to 23 kg plus a stroller and car seat free of charge. Infants do not get a carry-on allowance separate from their parent, but a nappy bag and infant food may be carried into the cabin.
Do different baggage rules apply on Cathay Pacific flights to New Zealand?
Yes. Direct Cathay Pacific flights between Hong Kong and Auckland or Christchurch use the piece system rather than the weight concept that applies on most other routes from Australia. Economy passengers on these services typically receive 1 piece up to 23 kg. If your itinerary includes a direct HKG–AKL or HKG–CHC segment, always check the allowance on your e-ticket for that specific leg.
