Singapore Airlines flies from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth to Singapore and onwards to more than 60 destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Its baggage policy is more generous than most, but it has one catch many travellers miss: your Economy fare type determines whether you get 25 kg or 30 kg checked. Book a Value or Lite fare and you are 5 kg behind before you have started packing.

This guide covers carry-on dimensions, checked baggage by fare and cabin, KrisFlyer tier allowances, packing weights in real terms, and the right suitcase size for every trip type. All figures are sourced directly from singaporeair.com.

Does My Bag Meet the 115 cm Rule?

Singapore Airlines measures carry-on by total linear dimensions - not per-side. Add length + width + height. The result must not exceed 115 cm.

The 115 cm rule in practice A standard 56 x 36 x 23 cm cabin suitcase equals exactly 115 cm - no spare room. Any bag with extended handles, bulging pockets, or slightly larger dimensions in any direction will exceed the limit. If your carry-on measures close to 115 cm empty, it will almost certainly push over once packed. Choose a bag that sits comfortably under the limit.

The Fare Type Problem: Why 25 kg is Not 30 kg

Singapore Airlines splits Economy into four tiers, each with a different checked baggage allowance. The gap between the cheapest and most flexible Economy fare is 5 kg - on a long-haul trip to London or Frankfurt, that is the difference between a comfortable bag and one that's stuffed to its limit.

Fare tier Booking classes Checked allowance (ex Americas) What it means in practice
Flexi Y, B, E 30 kg Fully changeable - usually the most expensive
Standard M, H, W 30 kg Mid-range fares - the most commonly booked
Value Q, N 25 kg Discounted, less flexible - often listed on comparison sites
Lite V, K 25 kg Cheapest Economy - least flexible, lower checked allowance

Your booking class is on your e-ticket or visible in Manage Booking on singaporeair.com. If you see Q, N, V, or K next to Economy, your checked allowance is 25 kg, not 30 kg.

How to find your fare class Log in to Manage Booking at singaporeair.com and look for the booking class code next to your fare description. Your e-ticket itinerary will also show the class code alongside your flight number. If you booked through a comparison site, confirm the booking class before assuming a 30 kg allowance.

Checked Baggage in Full

Singapore Airlines uses two systems depending on your destination. The weight concept covers all routes except Canada and the USA - you can check as many bags as you need, provided combined weight stays within your allowance and no single bag exceeds 32 kg. The piece concept applies to Canada and USA routes.

Weight Concept - All Routes Except Canada and USA

Cabin / Fare No status Elite Silver Elite Gold / SA Gold PPS Club
Suites / First 50 kg 60 kg 70 kg 100 kg

Premium Economy 35 kg 45 kg 55 kg 70 kg
Economy Flexi / Standard 30 kg 40 kg 50 kg 60 kg
Economy Value / Lite 25 kg 35 kg 45 kg 50 kg

KrisFlyer status boosts apply to Singapore Airlines-operated flights only. No single bag may exceed 32 kg.

What Does Your Allowance Actually Get You?

Your suitcase takes up part of your allowance before a single item goes in. Find your checked allowance in the left column, then read across to see how much you actually have left to pack depending on your suitcase weight.

Usable Packing Weight: What You Can Actually Fill
Find your fare allowance on the left, then choose your suitcase type to see your real packing weight.
Tighter - consider a lighter bag Comfortable for most trips Generous - room to bring back more
Your allowance Standard large (4.5 kg case) Lightweight large (3.2 kg case) Premium lightweight (2.3 kg case)

40 kg (Business) 35.5 kg to pack 36.8 kg to pack 37.7 kg to pack
A Tosca premium lightweight large suitcase weighs around 2.3 kg - giving you up to 2.2 kg more packing weight than a standard model on the same fare. That is roughly one pair of shoes, a hairdryer, and three extra outfits.

Why a lightweight suitcase matters on Singapore Airlines A premium lightweight large suitcase at around 2.3 kg versus a standard model at 4.5 kg gives you an extra 2.2 kg of usable packing weight. On a 25 kg Lite or Value fare, that gap is the difference between fitting a hairdryer, a pair of shoes, and three more outfits - or leaving them at home. Which Suitcase for Your Trip?

The right suitcase depends on your trip length, how much you pack, and your fare type. Here are the most common scenarios for SIA passengers from Australia.

🌏
Weekend or business trip - 1 to 4 days
Carry-on only. Economy 7 kg is tight but workable with a lightweight bag and smart packing.
Carry-on: max 56 x 36 x 23 cm, 7 kg
Lightweight Carry-On
🏖️
Summer holiday to Europe or Asia - 1 to 2 weeks
Light summer packing fits comfortably in a medium suitcase. A 25 kg Lite fare handles it without extras.
Medium checked suitcase - 65 to 70 cm
Medium Lightweight
🧥
Long-haul to UK or Europe, winter - 2 weeks plus
Winter clothes are heavy. A large lightweight suitcase on a Standard fare (30 kg) gives you room for coats, boots, and souvenirs home.
Large checked suitcase - 75 to 80 cm
Large Lightweight
👨👩👧👦
Family holiday - 2 adults, 2 children
Children aged 2+ get full adult allowances on SIA. A family of four on Standard fares has a combined 120 kg to spread strategically across bags.
Large per adult - medium per older child
Large Suitcase Range
🛍️
Shopping trip - lighter out, heavier home
Pre-purchasing 5 kg more than 48 hours before departure costs 25% less than buying at the airport. Plan the return weight before you leave Australia.
Large - plus pre-purchased extra weight
Large Suitcase Range

Pre-Purchasing Additional Baggage

Pre-purchasing online is always cheaper than paying at the airport. Singapore Airlines offers two discount windows - the earlier you buy, the better the saving.

Purchase timing Discount AUS rate per kg (Band 3)
More than 48 hours before departure 25% off USD 16.50 / kg
Within 48 hrs - up to 6 hrs before 10% off USD 19.80 / kg
Within 6 hours / at the airport No discount USD 22.00 / kg

Australia and New Zealand are Band 3. Extra weight is purchased in 5 kg blocks, up to 100 kg maximum additional per flight. KrisFlyer members receive further discounts on top of these rates.

Should You Buy Extra Baggage?

1
Weigh your bag at home before you leave. Already over 20 kg? Pre-purchase. Once you add toiletries, shoes, and a jacket you will almost certainly need it.
2
Check your fare type. Value or Lite (Q, N, V, K)? Your allowance is 25 kg, not 30 kg. If your packed bag is anywhere near 23 kg, buy extra to give yourself a buffer.
3
Planning to shop while travelling? Buy extra for the return before you leave Australia - 25% cheaper than buying at your departure airport abroad.
4
Travelling in winter? Winter clothing weighs 2 to 3 times summer clothing. A jacket alone can be 1.5 kg. Budget for this before you start packing.
5
None of the above? Lightweight packing, warm destination, Standard fare with 30 kg - you probably do not need extra. A lightweight large suitcase is your best tool for staying comfortably under the limit.

Liquids, Gels, and Powders in Your Carry-On

The international 100 ml rule applies on all Singapore Airlines flights. Every liquid, gel, aerosol, cream, or paste in your carry-on must be in a container no larger than 100 ml. All containers must fit in one transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum one litre capacity. One bag per passenger.

!
Durian is banned on all Singapore Airlines flights Durian is prohibited in both cabin and checked baggage on all SIA flights - no exceptions. If you are buying durian products as a gift in Singapore or elsewhere in Asia, they cannot travel with you on SIA. Arrange separate shipping before you fly.

Smart Bag Rules

  • Smart bags with a removable lithium battery may travel as carry-on (battery stays in bag, bag fully powered off) or as checked baggage (battery must be removed and carried in the cabin)
  • Smart bags with a non-removable battery are not accepted as carry-on or checked baggage on any SIA flight
  • GPS and Bluetooth trackers such as Apple AirTags are generally permitted
  • Power banks must be in carry-on only - never in checked baggage

Families - Children and Infants

Children aged two and above travelling on a child fare receive the full adult baggage allowance for their cabin class. A family of four on Economy Standard fares has a combined checked allowance of 4 x 30 kg = 120 kg. Infants travelling on a lap ticket receive up to 10 kg of checked baggage. Families travelling with infants may also check one of each of the following free of charge in addition to their standard allowance:

  • Category 1: One fully collapsible stroller or pushchair
  • Category 2: One carry-cot or car seat

KrisFlyer status boosts do not extend to infant allowances. The 10 kg infant allowance is fixed regardless of membership tier.

Codeshare Flights and Multi-Carrier Journeys

On itineraries that include flights operated by partner airlines under a Singapore Airlines flight number, the operating carrier's baggage rules apply to that sector - not SIA's. KrisFlyer status benefits for additional baggage also apply only to Singapore Airlines-operated flights.

Always check your e-ticket, not just the airline website Your e-ticket shows the baggage allowance for each sector individually. On mixed-carrier itineraries the allowance may differ per sector. Log in to Manage Booking before you pack, not after.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming 30 kg in Economy when booked on a Value or Lite fare (Q, N, V, K) - these include only 25 kg
  • Using a carry-on bag that measures over 115 cm total - a 56 x 36 x 24 cm bag already equals 116 cm
  • Carrying a laptop in a large padded backpack and expecting it to count as a personal item - the personal item must be 40 x 30 x 10 cm max per piece, and 80 cm total
  • Not logging into KrisFlyer before checking additional baggage prices - members receive discounts on top of the standard pre-purchase rates
  • Checking a single bag over 32 kg - Singapore Airlines will not accept it and you will need to repack before check-in
  • Expecting KrisFlyer status allowances to apply on codeshare partner flights - they apply only on SIA-operated flights
  • Buying extra baggage at the airport when purchasing more than 48 hours before departure saves 25%
  • Packing durian in carry-on or checked baggage - it is banned on all Singapore Airlines flights

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Singapore Airlines measure carry-on bag size?
By total linear dimensions - the sum of length + width + height. The maximum is 115 cm. A standard 56 x 36 x 23 cm suitcase equals exactly 115 cm including wheels and handles. Bags that exceed 115 cm at check-in must be checked into the cargo hold.
Can I bring a backpack as well as a carry-on suitcase?
In Economy, you can bring one carry-on bag and one personal item. If your backpack qualifies as a personal item (max 40 x 30 x 10 cm each, 80 cm total), yes. If it is larger, it counts as your carry-on, meaning you cannot also bring a separate cabin suitcase.
Does KrisFlyer status boost my carry-on allowance?
No. KrisFlyer Elite Silver, Elite Gold, and PPS Club boosts apply to checked baggage only. Carry-on allowances remain 1 bag for Economy and Premium Economy, and 2 bags for Business, Suites, and First, regardless of membership tier.
Is Singapore Airlines strict about the 7 kg carry-on weight limit?
Singapore Airlines states it conducts checks at check-in and boarding. Bags exceeding limits at check-in must be checked in. Enforcement varies by route and airport, but do not plan around leniency - particularly on busy sectors like Sydney-Singapore or Singapore-London where cabin space is genuinely limited.
Can I add extra baggage after checking in online?
Yes. You can purchase additional baggage through Manage Booking on singaporeair.com up to 6 hours before departure. More than 48 hours out receives a 25% discount. Within 48 hours to 6 hours receives 10% off. Within 6 hours, full airport rates apply.
What is the maximum size for a checked bag on Singapore Airlines?
On weight concept routes, bulky items checked at Changi Airport must not exceed 200 x 75 x 80 cm. On piece concept routes (Americas), each bag must not exceed 158 cm in total dimensions. No single bag may weigh more than 32 kg on any route.
What suitcase size is best for Singapore Airlines Economy from Australia?
For carry-on, a bag measuring no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (115 cm total) is the largest that qualifies - a lightweight model maximises your usable weight within the 7 kg limit. For checked on a Standard or Flexi fare (30 kg), a large suitcase (75 to 80 cm) is ideal for trips of 10 days or more. On Value or Lite fares (25 kg), a medium suitcase (65 to 70 cm) suits shorter or lighter trips.
Do Singapore Airlines baggage rules apply on codeshare flights?
No - codeshare flights operated by other airlines follow the operating carrier's policy, not SIA's. KrisFlyer status additional baggage benefits also only apply on Singapore Airlines-operated flights. Always check your e-ticket for the allowance on each sector.
