Key Terms Explained

Weight concept
Your allowance is a total weight. Check as many bags as you like, provided combined weight stays within your limit. No single bag can exceed 32 kg. Used on most Australia-Europe and Australia-Asia routes.
Piece concept
Your allowance is a fixed number of bags, each with an individual weight limit. Used on routes to and from North America and Africa. Each piece usually has a 158 cm dimension limit.
Total linear dimensions
The sum of length + width + height. Singapore Airlines (115 cm) and Air New Zealand (118 cm) use this to measure carry-on bags. A 56 x 36 x 23 cm bag equals 115 cm in total.
Personal item
A smaller bag permitted in addition to your main carry-on. Usually a handbag, slim laptop bag, or camera bag. Each airline sets its own size limit. Emirates does not operate a formal personal item category in Economy.
Most Significant Carrier (MSC)
On multi-carrier itineraries, the airline carrying you on the longest part of your journey. The MSC's baggage rules typically apply to the entire ticket on non-US/Canada routes.
Fare class / booking class
A letter code on your e-ticket identifying your specific fare within a cabin. Determines your baggage allowance on airlines like Singapore Airlines and China Southern, where the allowance varies within Economy.
